Technology and craftmanship for a lamp family with exceptional lighting quality
Project: Teula Line
Client: SURU
Location: Barcelona (Spain)
Year: 2024
Materials: Low-temperature fired clay, iron, LED modules
Keywords: Circular economy, modularity, repairability, local craftsmanship, energy-efficient lighting
Why?
The Teula Line was created to address the environmental and social challenges of contemporary lighting production. Many lamps are made with high-impact materials, lack repairability, and are often discarded prematurely. SURU aimed to demonstrate that lighting can be both aesthetically beautiful and environmentally responsible, produced locally with low-impact materials, modular design, and inclusive employment practices.
Teula combines traditional artisanal craftsmanship with innovative lighting technologies, creating lamps that are both handcrafted and designed for modern performance and well-being.
What?
Teula is a collection of artisanal lighting fixtures—including table and pendant lamps—where each lampshade is crafted from low-temperature-fired clay and paired with energy-efficient LED modules. The modular metal structure is handcrafted in Barcelona, designed for easy disassembly, repair, and replacement. The lamps ship semi-assembled in flat-pack format, reducing transport volume. The collection highlights circular economy principles, sustainable material choices, and local production while maintaining high design quality.
How?
Clay lampshades are cast in Barcelona using low-temperature firing, reducing energy use compared with conventional ceramic methods.
Metal components are fabricated and welded locally from iron, using recycled molds when possible, ensuring durability and low-impact production.
LED modules are energy-efficient and replaceable, extending the lifespan of the fixture.
Flat-shaped design reduces transport volume, and assembly is performed locally, involving a diverse workforce and promoting social inclusion.
Circadian lighting design: the Teula Line uses LED technology calibrated to support circadian rhythms, providing lighting that adapts to human biological cycles, enhancing well-being, alertness, and comfort in daily use.
