Yesterday our armchair design NOEM Carl was awarded with an Honourable Mention at the Catalonia Ecodesign Award 2019!

These prizes are organised biannually by the “Department of Territory and Sustainability” and the “Catalan Waste Agency”, and recognize the products and services, whether they are in the market or they are still in development, which seek to improve their environmental impact and extend their life cycle. Products that, with a functional design, break with the idea of buying, using and throwing and, instead, bet on minimizing their impact on the environment and health.

It’s actually the third time that we win an honourable mention in these prizes during the decade that we have been working, with the projects Relaja and Aalb.

Carl is the armchair of our NOEM furniture range, a collection designed by Nutcreatives with the goal of furnishing the space in a contemporary way, while having the best possible environmental and social impact. The armchair of the collection had an honourable mention in the category of Product in Development, out of hundred participants.

The biggest environmental impact of common armchairs comes from their upholstery. Not only the materials of the fabric and foam have normally a huge impact, but also the combination of glue, polyurethane foam, fabrics and wood or plastic has an impossible recycling process that is necessary to avoid.

During the design phase of the armchair, we put a big effort not only into achieving an essential design compromise between personality, ergonomics and aesthetics, but also into creating a network of suppliers, materials and disciplines to get the perfect balance between design and sustainability.

Carl is a clean stylish armchair made of wooden legs and arms with a plywood seat. The armchair is rigidized by a metallic structure that favours an easy assembly/disassembly and gives a customizable colour touch to the furniture piece.

With NOEM Carl we did the exercise of creating a flatpack armchair with a removable upholstery that can be washed, replaced, fixed and recycled. Moreover, we reduce the environmental impact by using a 100% recycled post consumption fabric for the cushions.

Carl is the demonstration that it is possible to produce a lightweight, strong and flatpack armchair without losing comfort or having a big impact in the environment. It is the perfect choice to put it besides your sofa at home or in the hall of your company to receive your clients in an environmental-friendly way.

We are happy to see our work awarded in such distinctive Prizes and it is an honour for us being able to share in public our NO-EMissions way of doing. We are also proud to see how designers are increasingly aware of circular economy seeing the big number of presented projects.

Congratulations to all the winners and thanks again to all those who supported this initiative as well as to all of the participants!
